Obelisk II Final.1

Final pics of Obelisk take 2. Learned a lot. Most certainly that time is key. Having made this twice now I think I would do the sides then cut the jig work before assembling as it would probably cut down on on time required to do the work and improve the quality. I used plywood this time as opposed to hard wood and it blew out and splintered much worse, to the point that the interior needs something too clean it up. That said hardwood has its own issues, namely fitting all the flooring together and planing it to uniform thickness. Also I found that, while a mitered joint looks better, on a 6ft cut it is problematic as it causes blade warpage. Even with that I don't think I could bring myself to use a but joint on the hardwood given the manner it would show on one side.

Design here is part lighthouse and part Egyptian monolith. The concept is of the dichotomy between personal chaos and the need for order in schooling. The rigid for of the obelisk on one side and relieved curvilinear lines on the other. As I was worried about the time required I assembled first and cut second meaning only 2 matching sides were done before it was due, see above for my thoughts on that. I finished it in white with a black accent, however I think on the next (heh) I will have to bring more of the accent color into it since it jumps out a bit by itself like this.
